CFTC’s Massad hires new Sherriff

Newly-inaugurated CFTC Chairman Timothy Massad has crossed off the first item on his long to do list. The Agency today announced the appointment of Aitan Goelman as Director of Enforcement. Mr Goelman has 20 years’ experience civil and criminal, prosecutor and defence; an outspoken character, he is known to be a tenacious and effective litigation lawyer.

“Aitan brings valuable experience in government and private practice, as well as a strong commitment to public service. He will be a tough, aggressive and fair leader at a critical time in the Commission’s history”, said Chairman Massad.

This almost-immediate appointment instantiates the Chairman’s confirmation speech emphasis on the Agency’s enforcement role. It is refreshing to see such a speech as a statement of intent rather than a mouthing of pro forma platitudes and augurs well for the CFTC’s new era.
